Groundbreaking began mid-June, with Mark Dorman Construction
LLC overseeing the entire project – Dorman was also involved
with construction of the 110,000 square foot winery from 1992-1994.
Building architecture and landscape design is provided by Bowman
Bowman Novick Inc., Kansas City, MO. Lorie Doolittle Bowman,
principal architect, has worked with the King family since 1991
and was lead architect for the design of the King Estate production
facility and surrounding landscape.
“We are fortunate to have the same leadership with design
& construction as we had in 1992,” stated Ed King
III, King Estate Winery President. “The winery has proven
that quality design, craftsmanship and materials are well worth
our investment.”
Lorie Doolittle Bowman added, “The new Visitor Center
will accommodate over 250 guests and is designed to provide
year-round wine tasting activities, art exhibits, and seasonal
events. It features a large tasting room, hearth room, and a
special ‘Reserve Room’ for King Estate Tower Club
members."
Outdoor terraces will enable visitors to enjoy the panoramic
view, and a Tulikivi soapstone fireplace will make it a cozy
retreat during winter months. The two story facility will also
include an upstairs conference room with a full array of audio-visual
and teleconference capabilities to host off-site business meetings
and group wine education seminars.
The new building will complement the architectural style of
the winery complex with steeply pitched red tile roofs, stone
masonry and stucco. The structure incorporates a significant
amount of locally sourced glue-laminated and recycled heavy
timber framing. Hand-crafted cabinetry and paneling, hand-made
tiles, copper sinks, and custom fixtures are some of the features
designed to enhance the visitor experience.
