Helpful Hints
The mysteries surrounding wine and wine appreciation are boundless, encountered only by propelled interest and learning. Many fear the industry and the embarrassment associated with the mispronunciation of foreign names.
Myths of elitism and snobbery must be dispelled, and can only be countered by a working knowledge of the basics and a genuine love of wine.
Those who truly love wine know the first rule of thumb: appreciation is achieved through interest and knowledge.
We have compiled some general guidelines to help you get started in your journey.
Rule of Thumb
- Enjoy more acidic wines with rich foods.
- Use light wines with light meals, heavier wines with heavier meals.
- Red wine should be opened before serving.
- Red wines should be served at room temperature.
There are many different components to creating a fine wine. These can be broken down by: grape variety, soil, slope, altitude, vineyard orientation, climate (weather conditions), crop yield, and general plant maintenance. Pruning techniques play a big part in how many clusters each vine produces, making way for high or low quantities/qualities.
The best temperature for white wines is about 55°F. This means that typically you can pull them from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before serving. White wines do not need to breathe.
Glasses: larger ones are for red wines. This is to allow as much oxygen exposure to the surface of the wine as possible. Medium glassware is good for white wines.
