Deep garnet hue. Bright scents of cherry, dust and a vanilla note. Big flavors of ripe cherry, leather and toasted oak. Long close shows lots of fruit. $50

Plummy and somewhat soft/ripe in direction, especially for an Oregon Pinot, this medium-full-bodied effort scores points for its rich aromas and supple, fairly open demeanor in the mouth. If a bit quiet under its frontal ripeness, it is tasty and continuous and it invites current enjoyment.

King Estate 2001 Domaine Pinot Noir
Score: 91
Most Oregon wineries seem to equate high prices with high extract, high alcohol and high concentrations of new oak. King Estate's lovely and elegant new Domaine bottling shows a different style to good effect. Powerful scents of Pinot cherry-berry and plum fruit, laced with toast, milk chocolate, vanilla wafer and creamery butter lead into a firm, supple, silky wine. Graceful and seamless, it's a supremely elegant Pinot that expresses the grape with quiet power.

Strives for elegance and delicacy and achieves a lithe, pretty style, centering on strawberry and raspberry flavors shaded with dusky spice notes. Flavors build with successive sips. Drink now through 2008.
