...Pinot grigio is the most popular imported white wine, and some terrific pinot gris wines are being made in Pennsylvania and Oregon. Chaddsford makes a killer pinot grigio that sells fro $14.29 in State Stores. Available via special order, Oregon's King Estate makes a fine regular ($17) and reserve ($22) pinot gris.

2000 King Estate Reserve Pinot Gris at $19.99. This wine had a perfume-type aroma with Granny Smith Apples and a hint of minerals. It tasted mature, more in an Old-World style than Oregonian. It had a medium body and more fruit than the nose initially led us to believe.

BEST NEW WORLD WHITE
KING ESTATE, PINOT GRIS RESERVE, USA 2000
Founded by the King family in 1992, this large estate specializes in Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir...King's Pinot Gris can rival the best from New Zealand. Floral and spicy, with excellent fruit/acidity and lovely ripeness, this is an exciting, confident wine that stood out at the recent Pacific-Northwest tasting.

Dry and refreshing for its open texture and focused pear and melon flavors, with hints of spice and citrus on the finish. Drink now.

BEST WHITE
KING ESTATE, PINOT GRIS RESERVE, OREGON 2000
It seems that King Estate threw out all the old recipes before making this highly individual Pinot Gris. As full bodied as an ultra-ripe Chardonnay, it has a fascinating texture, so soft and silky that it just might even win over the staunchest traditionalist Ripe, opulent and wonderfully viscose, it offers up fragrances of crushed flowers, tangerine, mineral and lavender. With similar flavors, it shows a bit of nuttiness and ripe melons in its long, unctuous finish. It is fermented entirely in stainless steel tanks, and shows bright flavors perhaps because it does not go through malolactic fermentation. It was, however, aged sur lie in large oak ovals for 10 months to contribute to its creamy palate. King Estate is Oregon's top producer of Pinot Gris, but it limited the 2000 Reserve to 3,800 cases. Enjoy over the next year.

2000 Oregon Reserve Pinot Gris $20
A clean knife to shuck oysters, there's enough mouthwatering acidity with this wine to carry through a dozen or two. Complex aromatics seem to grow right out of that acidity, in sharp blades of green grass. They balance the sweet, fat fruit in the middle, as does the frisky, mineral finish. The middle is rich enough for a veal chop or oyster stew.

2000 Pinot Gris, Reserve, OR
Very pale greenish color. Aromas of talc, melon, and spiced pear. Fruity and fresh, with flavors of ripe pear and melon fruit. Rich, clean, and well balanced; serve with black cod and oyster mushrooms.

The 2000 Pinot Gris, Reserve, Oregon, $20, is quite different with a soft and sweetish bouquet of apple and hay before flavors of sweet apple, very sweet lemon, white peach, and pear and a long, focused, intense finish. Very nice.

Outstanding
King Estate 2000 Reserve Pinot Gris, Oregon,$20 -- We've come to expect no less from King Estate, which always seems to produce top pinot gris. Big citrus and spice aromas lead to nice tangerine and tropical fruit flavors. It has crisp acidity and a lingering, complex finish.

2000 King Estate, Reserve, Pinot Gris (Oregon)
Summary: This wine displayed a brilliant, straw color with aromas of lemon, spice and peaches. It had balanced flavors of apricots and tropical fruits with a bright acidity. It has a crisp, refreshing finish that suggest peaches, almonds and minerals.
Food Friendliness: This would be a perfect wine with shellfish, according to the panel, but also try with cold chicken.
