1998 Signature Pinot Gris

1998 Pinot Gris

Winemaker's Notes

This brilliant, pale platinum Pinot Gris displays aromas of tropical fruit, peach, passion fruit, papaya, apple, orange blossom, with hints of honeysuckle and floral spices. In the mouth the wine is rich, round with flavors of peach, pear, nectarine, and apricots.

This Pinot Gris maintains a perfect balance of fruit and acidity through its soft and lingering finish. Suggested retail: $15.00

Technical Notes

Final Analysis: 13% alcohol; TA: 0.67 g/100ml; pH: 3.33

Fermentation: 100% stainless steel, temperature controlled tank fermentation. 5% malolactic fermentation.

Aging: 80% sur lie aged for six months. 6% aged in neutral French oak barrels for six months. 5% aged in large oak ovals for three months.

Growing Season
Bud-break this year started mid-April for most Oregon vineyards, a mere 5-10 days behind 1998's schedule.

Yet, the cold, dry month of May slowed the physiological growing process and therefore, flowering didn't occur until the first week of July.

During berry set, a fair amount of shatter occurred indicating that berries were insufficiently pollinated. As a result, the surviving pinot gris/grigio berries were slightly larger with an average number of seeds per berry at 2-3.
