Lingering finish of Pinot Gris
From: The Sun, August 28, 2002
Text by: Nick Tomassi
WINE OF THE WEEK: King Estate, Ore., 2000 Pinot Gris; pale straw, aromas of honey, peach, melon, pear and apple. Flavors of pear, apple peach and grapefruit; medium bodied with an excellent balance of fruit and acidity through its soft and lingering finish. ($15)
A delightful summer wine, Pinot Gris, is a much sought-after dry white wine in Oregon and France, and is known as Pinot grigio in Italy.
It is one of the most popular partners of seafood dishes, best suited to cool climates where its natural acidity can remain in check. Oregon's is considered a perfect a pairing with salmon.
This week's selection was fermented 100 percent in a stainless steel, temperature-controlled tank, and aged 100 percent sur lie (wine left, not disturbed) for six months; 5 percent aged in 930 gallon oak ovals for four months, giving it only a slight amount of oak, and letting the fruit shine through. Their 2000 reserve sees a bit more oak and sells for around $20...

2000 King Estate Pinot Gris (Oregon)
Summary: The panel enjoyed a bright, golden wine with aromas of green apples, pears, peaches and apricots. It offered flavors of lemons, peaches, and apricots with a bracing, palate-cleansing acidity. It had a somewhat abrupt finish with apricots and hints of spice.
Food Friendliness: A great food wine that begs for oysters. It would also work with sweet vegetable dishes or preparations
with fruit sauces.

...There's no one type of wine that's right for grilled foods.
It all depends on what's being cooked. Grilled swordfish, for example, needs a dry, crisp white, such as the aromatic, fruity 2000 King Estate Pinot Gris from Oregon ($15)...

What wine marries best with oysters? You might be surprised

2000 King Estate Pinot Gris. Tasted by itself it seemed too broadly fruit for oyster duty. But the combination of grape and sea was magic.

2000 Oregon Pinot Gris $15
Dry as talc, frisky and fresh as cilantro, this citrusy pinot gris fills the mouth with a creamy texture and warm, orange blossom tones. The lively bit of acidity makes it a good wine for Thai food.

2000 Pinot Gris, OR
Very pale greenish color. Aromas of green apple fruit with notes of lime. Well balanced, clean, and refreshing, with flavors of pear skin and melon fruit and a long, juicy finish. Pair with sauteed scallops and crisp-fried leeks.

The 2000 Pinot Gris, Oregon, $15, shows hay, herb, and nicely sweet melon on the nose. The ripe palate drops the hay and adds some astringency before a medium-broad, medium-long finish. Well balanced and fresh, this is a Nice wine.

KING ESTATE, 2000 OREGON, $120 ($15)
Well balanced and full bodied, this Pinot Gris has moderate flavor intensity, supple texture, and a very long finish. It tastes of roasted nut, lemon peel, apple, and pear. [2002-2003]
