1998 King Estate Pinot Noir: This was a good year for Oregon pinots, and this wine was full of cherries and spice wrapped in a creamy texture.

PINOT NOIR 1998
TASTE Score 88
Ruby-colored with a light rim of water. Alcohol hints on the nose followed by complex strawberry, raspberry and red fruit aromas. Soft attack on the palate of delicate red fruit with a good balance of acid and fruit. Intense length of fruit through the finish. Well-made wine that has balance and Pinot Noir character with a delicate, even feminine, quality.

The 1998 Pinot Noir, Oregon, $20, spent 10-12 months in French oak, 25% new, and has earth and barnyard before cherry and hints of spicy oak on the nose which also evidences some volatile acidity which may blow off if the wine is decanted. The tart-sweet palate shows cherry, sweet strawberry, cranberry, and some tannin before a medium-broad, medium-long finish. Nice.

KING ESTATE 1998 OREGON
A step or two off the pace set by its fancier sibling, this likeable, well-made wine is never quite so deep in fruit or lavishly draped in oak. It offers a pleasant, if slightly reserved, look at varietal cherries, while it exhibits the firm structure often noted in wines of its northern provenance.

1998 Pinot Noir, OR $20 Light garnet color. Red fruits, faint herb, and caramel in the nose. Bright, juicy flavors of cherry and light caramel. Approachable, with a warm, spicy finish. Drink now or continue cellaring up to 3 years. Good value.
