Ray received his BS degree in Botany from University of Maryland and moved out to Oregon to acquire a MS degree in Plant Pathology from Oregon State. He began his career in viticulture as a field laborer and tractor driver at a small family vineyard owned by Lloyd and Doe Crisp under the mentorship of their son Dai. Through a combination of practical vineyard experience as well as viticulture and enology coursework at OSU and Chemeketa Community College he quickly moved into vineyard management. While managing Croft Vineyards Ray helped produce premium grapes for a number of the most prestigious wineries in Oregon including King Estate. His dedication to growing the highest quality grapes a site can produce combined with his commitment to the same philosophy of sustainable and organic production we espouse here at King Estate made him a natural fit to join our team. After an initial two-year period of consulting with our vineyard manager, Meliton Martinez, as well as the winemaking team focusing on maximizing our estate vineyard, he was brought on full time in 2013. His responsibilities expanded to overseeing the activities at both the Estate as well as all the contracted vineyards from which we purchase fruit, stretching from the Columbia Valley of Washington and Oregon through the Willamette, Lorane, Umpqua and Rogue valleys.
